College for Kids makes a splash at MCC during first week
Meridian Community College’s College for Kids wrapped up its first week of summer fun, and excitement is already building for another round of learning and laughter when students return on Monday, June 9.
With 540 students ages 6 to 12 enrolled this summer, it’s one of the larger turnouts the program has seen. Program Coordinator Ashlee Dean said week one ran smoothly, even with many younger students filling the classrooms.
“Monday was busy, but by the end of the day, we were a well-oiled machine,” Dean said. “It’s rewarding to see it all come together.”
Throughout the week, students explored more than 30 classes—from art to science to
hands-on games. One of the biggest hits this summer has been “Cooking for Fun,” where kids get to learn in MCC’s own café-style kitchen. Dean said the café setting
makes the class feel extra special for the kids.
Another favorite? Bubble ball, a brand-new activity this year, where students bounce and bump inside giant inflatable suits. “They were ecstatic all week,” Dean said.
Other fun moments included the sea creature relay, which tied into this summer’s under-the-sea theme.
With 35 instructors leading the way, Dean praised the high quality of teaching across all classes. “We have really good instructors, and they’re a big part of what makes this program work,” she said.
Looking ahead, Dean hopes to gather feedback from parents and teachers through surveys to help improve the program for next year.
