College for Kids wraps up another term
Though Meridian Community College’s summer camp College for Kids wrapped up two full weeks of fun, plans are already taking shape for an even bigger and better experience next year.
This year, some 540 students ranging from ages 6 to 12 cheered, painted, designed, collected, fished, crafted, cooked, strummed, and did more during their sessions at College for Kids. Program Coordinator Ashlee Dean said the event was a success —even with many younger students filling the classrooms for the first time.
Students rotated through more than 30 different classes, from art and science to hands-on games and creative activities. One of the biggest hits this year was “Cooking for Fun,” which gave kids the chance to cook in MCC’s café-style kitchen. Dean said the setting made the experience feel extra special.
A new favorite this year? Bubble ball—where students bounced and bumped around in oversized inflatable suits. “They were ecstatic,” Dean said.
Other highlights included the sea creature relay, a fun nod to this year’s under-the-sea theme.
With 35 instructors on board, Dean said the strength of the teaching team helped make everything run smoothly. “We had really good instructors, and they’re a big part of what made this program work,” she said.
Dean plans to gather feedback from parents and teachers to help shape next summer’s sessions.
