Hungarian-born artist Andrea Kostyal to exhibit work at MCC’s Casteel Gallery

Meridian Community College will welcome artist Andrea Kostyal as the next featured artist at the Casteel Art Gallery, bringing works shaped by international roots, public art, and connection to Mississippi communities.

An opening reception for Koystal’s exhibit is Feb. 5, from 3-5:30 p.m. in the gallery, which is located in the Davidson Fine Arts Center in Ivy-Scaggs Hall on the MCC campus. The exhibit will be on display through March 5.

Kostyal is a Hungarian-born artist who trained in fine art and textiles in Pécs, Hungary. She later built her career in the United States, where she now lives and works in South Mississippi. Her artwork is known for bold color, movement, and scenes inspired by everyday life and shared spaces.

“My dreamlike paintings are inspired by urban landscape and nature that reflect experiences from my childhood and young adulthood,” Kosytal said.

Over the past decade, Kostyal has become a familiar name in Mississippi’s art scene. She is the co-owner of Singing River Art Studio and a co-founder of Artists Across Borders, a group that connects artists through shared projects and exhibitions. From 2017 to 2022, she worked as a gallery and museum assistant at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gallery of Art and Design.

Kostyal is also widely recognized for her large-scale public art. Her murals can be found across the state, including a 45-foot-wide mural in downtown Vicksburg completed in 2025 and major works in Hattiesburg that focus on community, hope and resilience. Several of her projects were created in partnership with local arts organizations and universities.

The artist noted: “My craving and memories of dynamic city life, the sense of the streets’ atmosphere suggests that my paintings investigate the natural environment and their connections with man-made structures in harmony.”

Her work has been featured in galleries throughout Mississippi and beyond, and she has earned numerous awards and grants from the Mississippi Arts Commission as well as being recognized by statewide arts organizations for her mixed-media and abstract work.

The Miller Art Gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and on Friday by appointment. Admission is free.
