College’s Candy Cruise delights trick-or-treaters

Trick-or-treaters open their MCC bags for treats during the College’s third annual Candy Cruise. This year’s event was held on the College’s track.

New to the Meridian area, mom Amy Simon was happy to bring her young family to MCC's Candy Cruise.

Pushing her eight-month-old twins in a double stroller and guiding her three-year-old son, Simon said Candy Cruise was a treat for her and them because it was easier to manage her children than going door-to-door in traditional Halloween fashion. "We just moved here, and we're in the military," she said.

Others also seemed to enjoy the new MCC Track venue, for some 1,150-plus trick-or-treaters joined the College's third annual Candy Cruise. Charles Carter was one of the many adults who escorted youngsters; with him were Kaylee and Nekayla, eager to show off their candy-filled MCC bags. Their favorite stop: Seeing Mickey and Minnie Mouse and Donald Duck characters.

Jan Murphy, bookstore manager, said the event was an excellent way for families to trick-or-treat in a safe environment and have fun.

Visitors were not the only ones getting into the spirit of things – MCC faculty, staff, students, and campus organizations did so, too, by decorating tents and donning costumes. Others took notice.  One of the judges for the booth decorating contest, Jackie Harms, general manager of WTOK TV, said everyone demonstrated such good school spirit. “You could tell they were here to make this a fun event for the youngsters and families," she said.

Winners of the booths were Phi Theta Kappa for the Charlie Brown It's the Great Pumpkin Halloween theme, Workforce Development for the Under the Sea theme, and Student Recruiting for the 1001 Dalmations theme.

Harms added, “You appreciate those who put a lot of time and energy into this because you can just tell some of these booths went above and beyond. And their creativity was just superb.”

MCCers distributed about 1,088 pounds of candy during the two-and-a-half-hour event.
