Giving the gift of life
Though it was a rainy, windy day, Meridian Community College freshman Christopher Ray Brooks, 19, of Rose Hill, made it a point to participate in the College’s campus blood drive.
“I like doing it,” he said about donating blood and noting that he has type O positive blood, which is given to patients more than any other type and is considered the most needed. “I’ve given plenty of times before,” the emergency medical technician student said.
Students, faculty, staffers, and community residents rolled up their sleeves as they donated blood during a two-day drive with Mississippi Blood Services.
Malerie Guess, MCC student activities coordinator, said the event is just one way the College gives back to the community. “We never know the importance of the impact that we can make in another person's life. Blood saves lives. At any moment, any individual could be the one needing blood. We could be next, so it is important to help where we can, while we can,” she said.
The College’s next blood drive will be in the fall. Guess added, “We would love to see students and teachers participate again or start participating in serving by giving blood.”
