MCC celebrates Black History Month with gospel music program

Black History Month CelebrationMeridian Community College will celebrate Black History Month with a program on Wednesday, Feb. 22, titled "Embracing the History and Culture of Gospel Music: Something to Sing About." 

The program begins at 11 a.m. in the McCain Theater, located inside Ivy-Scaggs Hall on the MCC campus. Admission is free of charge, and the public is invited to attend. 

MCC students, faculty, staff, and community residents will participate in this music-filled program. As a special part of the event, the Magnolia Middle School Choir will perform. As a part of the program, moderator Amber N'Spire Walker will explain the meaning of the songs performed and why it was important for African American to sing them, said Marlo Turner, MCC diversity coordinator.  

"We're excited to celebrate Black History Month by highlighting the legacy of gospel music and its significance in African American culture,” said Turner.  

She added, "We hope this event will educate our students and the community about the rich history and culture of gospel music and how it has shaped the African American experience."
