Eklektiko Duo to perform April 20 at MCC
Come to Meridian Community College Foundation Chapel to experience a world of music – beyond this country’s borders.
MCC’s Arts & Letters Series will present Eklektiko Duo, a guitar and piano/vocal duo featuring musical artists Tanja Mirić and Sarah Waters, on Monday, April 29, beginning at 6 p.m.
Eklektiko delves into the music of the Balkans, the Mediterranean, and beyond. Mirić, a native of Bosnia, is both a classical guitarist and the arranger of much duo’s repertoire.
The traditional folk songs, which often tell colorful stories of the Balkan peninsula, range from soulful to playful. Waters, a mezzo-soprano, sings Mirić’s versions of these songs, which have Bosnian, Croatian, and Greek origins.
But that’s not all. Eklektiko also ventures into guitar and piano duets of Boccherini (writing in a Spanish style) and Diabelli (in an Austrian style), as well as contemporary French composer Erik Marchelie.
Waters is a native of Washington, D.C., who loves to sing in as many languages, though Latin is her favorite. She teaches music history and voice at Belhaven University, and Choctaw hymns have been a recent focus of her research. Waters studied voice at Jackson State University and completed her doctor in musical arts in church music at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
Mirić, a native of Bosnia and Herzegovina, has been playing the guitar for over three decades. She holds music degrees from Mississippi College, Southern Methodist University, and the University of Minnesota.
Whether performing as a soloist or with Duo Mirić (guitar duo), her passion for connecting through music has taken her to stages such as the Guitar Foundation of America Showcase in Louisville, Kentucky, Fort Worth Guitar Festival, St. Louis Classical Guitar Society, and the Schubert Club Courtroom Concert Series in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Mirić is also an arranger and author, with two dozen published books for solo and duo guitar. She has received multiple grants from the Mississippi Arts Commission in support of her creative work.
