Alum Matt Davis: MCC directed career path

Matt Davis says his time at Meridian Community College gave him more than an education — they gave him confidence, connections, and a clear direction for his future.
Davis, 43, of Whynot, graduated from MCC in 2003 with an associate degree in Broadcast Communication Technology. Today, he serves as the Director of Public Relations for the Meridian Public School District, a role he has held since 2017.
“My parents always encouraged me to continue my education after high school, and I knew MCC would be a good place to do that,” Davis said. “It allowed me to adjust to college while taking any required classes I needed to transfer to Mississippi State.”
After completing his studies at MCC, Davis earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing from Mississippi State University-Meridian.
The career path was a natural fit. Both of Davis’s parents worked in public relations and communications arenas. His mom (also an MCC alumna) worked at Rush Foundation Hospital and at MCC, and his dad worked in communications for the Air National Guard at Key Field.
“I have many memories of going to work with them and being fascinated by the cameras, the events, and the chance to connect with people,” Davis said. “They were both instrumental in developing my love of working with the public, photography, and creative things.”
At MCC, Davis found hands-on experiences that built his confidence and skills. As a member of the Ivy League Recruiters, he learned leadership and overcame his fear of public speaking. In the Broadcast Communication Technology program, he called basketball and baseball games, operated cameras, and produced video content. He also worked in what was then the College’s Production Center.
“My favorite part about MCC would have to be the people,” Davis said. “There are so many people who were instrumental in mentoring me while I was at MCC, and I am forever grateful for that.”
In his role with the Meridian Public School District, Davis highlights student achievements and tells the district’s story. “The best part of my job is seeing students reach their goals and getting to help share those successes,” he said.
Davis also encourages today’s students to consider MCC. “If you live in Lauderdale County, take advantage of the Tuition Guarantee. It’s a blessing — there are so many individuals and businesses who want to see you succeed. Get involved. I met so many people and was able to do so many great things there.”
Family remains central to Davis’s life. He and his wife, Stacey, (also an MCC alumna) have been married for 20 years. They have two sons — Landon, 18, who is studying in MCC’s Lineman Program, and Maddox, 16, a high school junior active in Stage 2 productions and the MCC Community Jazz Band.
Looking ahead, Davis said “I believe I will always work in communications in some way.”
