MCC alum turns life-changing experience into career

Alison Beatriz Perez-Zapata saw firsthand how physical therapy can change a life. Years later, that experience led her to a career helping others do the same.

Perez-Zapata, 23, of Meridian, graduated from Meridian Community College in 2025 with an associate of applied science degree from the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Program. She is now a licensed physical therapist assistant working at Choctaw Residential Center through MidSouth Rehab.

Her decision to enter the field began after her father was in a near-fatal car accident.

“My dad went to rehab where he started in a wheelchair, unable to stand by himself, and slowly learned how to walk again,” Perez-Zapata said. Seeing that process made a major impact on her.

Perez-Zapata chose MCC because of its closeness to home and the strength of its PTA program.

“It has a strong graduation rate and a track record of preparing students for the National Physical Therapy Exam,” she said.

While at MCC, she said the support of her classmates meant everything.

“I spent countless hours studying and working alongside my PTA classmates either on the phone, before class, or after class. Those moments created a sense of community and support that made them feel like family. The friendships we built while learning together are what I remember most fondly,” she said

Now in her role, Perez-Zapata works primarily with elderly patients. She said the relationships she builds each day are one of the most rewarding parts of her job. “I look forward to seeing my patients,” she said. “They make me laugh every day, and I get to help improve their quality of life.”

Perez-Zapata credits her family for shaping her work ethic and focus on education. Her parents, Royder Perez and Beatriz Perez, encouraged her and her older brother, Royder Jr. Perez-Zapata, to pursue their goals. Her brother is also an MCC alumnus.

“My dad is one of the hardest-working people I know,” she said. “He taught me to be grateful and to work hard for what I want.”

Looking back, Perez-Zapata encourages current and future students to make full use of campus resources.

“Take advantage of tutoring services and learning centers,” she said. “Build relationships with your professors and classmates, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Stay focused on your goals, but also enjoy your college experience.”
