MCC and her mom set Hill on her career path

Sharonica Hill

When Sharonica Hill was uncertain about her career path, she listened to her mom.

"My mother, Ethel Anderson, suggested I consider being a social worker. My mother believed it would be a great career choice for me,” Hill said.

"And she was right,” Hill added, “because I love being a social worker."

While she credits her mom for setting her on the right path for her future, Hill also acknowledges Meridian Community College for getting her start as a non-traditional college student.

Today, Hill is an independent contractor employed as a Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW) therapist. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, licensed clinical social workers diagnose as well as treat mental health, behavioral issues, and emotional disorders.

A graduate of MCC's Class of 2008, Hill received her associate of arts degree and later a bachelor of social work degree from Mississippi State University-Meridian and a master of social work degree from Jackson State University. "To further my expertise as a social worker, I fulfilled clinical supervision hours and passed licensure for LCSW," she said.

The education foundation that the College gave to Hill was solid. "MCC helped me to pursue my degree by allowing flexibility with class scheduling. I was a full-time mother and a full-time employee who enjoyed the convenience of evening classes at MCC," she noted.

Her MCC instructors were more than helpful. "Their compassion fueled my drive and determination to achieve success," Hill added. She also gives thanks to her loving husband and children for their support then and now.

So what advice would she give to others? "Attend MCC as a start to challenge yourself for preparation toward life-long goals."

And listen to your mother.
