Powerful: MCC program sets up students for careers in utility industry

Utility Lineman

As the demand for reliable power infrastructure continues to grow, Meridian Community College is meeting that need by offering its Utility Lineman Program.

This 16-week certificate program instructs students on building, repairing, and maintaining electrical power and distribution systems. "We teach them basic lineman skills," said Dan Steverson, program coordinator and instructor. Joining him is Kim Culpepper, who is also an instructor, and together, the two have more than 75 years of lineman experience in the industry.

Besides the classroom lecture, students spend a majority of the time outdoors with hands-on exercises – including pole climbing – enduring the weather elements that come with the job.

In addition to the skills they learn to help prepare and maintain power lines, the students earn credentials including an OSHA II card, American Heart Association’s basic life support, a commercial driver’s license and a forklift. “We teach them how to be safe and come home every evening,” Steverson said.

Industry partners, including Mississippi Power Association, East Mississippi Electric Power Association, and Southern Pine Electric, also connect with the College program, giving demonstrations, talks, and leads on potential employment.

There are 23 students enrolled in this term. The next term begins Jan. 10, 2024.
