Learning to Lead: Atlas Roofing shares workplace wisdom at MCC
Meridian Community College students in the Leadership Effectiveness and Development (LEAD) program got a real-world lesson on what it takes to work in human resources, thanks to two guest speakers from Atlas Roofing Co.
Matthew Betts, senior H.R. manager, and Arthur Harris, H.R. generalist, spoke to the campus community about what they can expect if they pursue careers in human resources—or any field.
Atlas Roofing Co. began from a single asphalt shingle manufacturing facility in 1982 and has grown to 36 facilities with four major divisions: Polyiso Roof & Wall Insulation, Shingle & Underlayment, Molded Products, and Web Technologies.
The LEAD session focused on preparing students for the workplace and helping them understand how H.R. professionals support teams and shape company culture.
“If you have a passion for helping people grow in their careers and want to be a part of multiple departments, this is a field where you can do that,” Betts said.
The two shared an overview of H.R. duties—from recruiting to being involved in employee training and even discipline. “We wear many hats,” he added. “It’s important for students to see the impact H.R. has inside a company.”
Harris offered advice that applies to almost any career: be prepared, be flexible, and bring the right attitude.
“How you respond when there’s conflict or disagreement matters,” Harris said. “The main thing is to communicate, meet people, and be open to those discussions.”
The visit was the first time the Atlas team had spoken at MCC, but they said they hoped it won’t be the last. “We’re always looking to recruit good talent,” Betts said. “We want students to see us as a resource and maybe even come job shadow with us or tour our facility.”
When asked what they enjoy most about their jobs, both men shared a common answer: being there to help.
“You can have the skill and the will,” Betts said, “but if you don’t have the right attitude, it won’t take you far.”
MCC’s Leadership Effectiveness and Development program session, held monthly and open to all, helps students grow as leaders by providing opportunities to learn from experienced professionals.
