MCC LEAD session: Fueling student success
Lowell Martin shares tips for student success during LEAD session.
Study skills. Mental health. Resilience.
These three components are intertwined and essential to student success, said Lowell Martin, study skills instructor and Success Center director, when he spoke to students at the November LEAD – Leadership Effectiveness and Development – session hosted by Meridian Community College’s Campus Life.
“Don’t look at the now; look at where you want to be,” Martin said to students when they lack motivation to study.
He explained when he was working on his master’s degree, he had a full-time job and family obligations. “I had two things that would motivate me. First, I had a picture of my kids, and I put that in my notebook. And I got an old pay stub – the money I am making without the education – and I put that in my notebook.
“Let me tell you, those two things helped a lot. There are those moments when you don’t think you can do it. I always tell people – hold on. Keep doing what you’re doing,” Martin said.
He reminded the audience that emotional well-being is essential and that the College offers MCC students access to mental health agencies and programs. And resilience is important for moving forward.
His advice: “You’ve got this. Now go get this.”
LEAD sessions, held monthly and open to all MCC students, are designed to help students develop strong skills in leadership and personal and professional development and offer educational enrichment. The final session for Fall Semester 2024 is Dec. 2, starting at 1 p.m. in the Quave Center.
